Similar to CHARULATA, GHARE BAIRE tells the story of a love triangle. Nikhilesh is an educated, progressive man who would like to free his wife Bimala from her loneliness. She is supposed to learn English and the piano as such, which is why he introduces her to his friend Sandip. The two of them fall in love, which puts Nikhil and Bimala’s marriage to the test. The plot plays out before the backdrop of the political unrest at the start of the 20th century. Nikhil and Sandip represent two opposing positions here: Nikhil is peace-loving and passive, while Sandip is gripped by the social unrest around him.
